The Whitefish Library Association would like to express its deep gratitude to retiring WLA Board Member Jerry Hanson for his decades of support to both the Library and the Association, many of those serving as the president of the WLA Board. Jerry’s father preceded him as the WLA president in the Association's early years, and Jerry has proudly carried on the Hanson family tradition, serving as one of WLA's longest-serving members (if not the longest-serving member). In addition to Jerry's long history of Whitefish civic service, he has consistently been a staunch supporter of local libraries, serving several years as a chair of the Flathead County Library Board of Trustees, a hard-working appointed member of the Whitefish City Council's Ad Hoc Committee to help research and determine the future of Whitefish's Library, and a tireless and willing volunteer to help legally and operationally implement Whitefish's unanimously approved separation from the County system to create an independent community library. His contributions to, and insight into, the Whitefish Library Association, cannot be replaced and will be sorely missed.
Cheryl Hyland has been the inspiration that has powered many of the Whitefish Library Association's achievements during her tenure as a board member. Her tireless efforts in fundraising through grant writing, overseeing WLA's Great Fish participation, and many other events have made a lasting impact in the community. In addition, her devotion to focusing on board structure and development helped strengthen WLA during crucial periods. The board will miss her joy and passion for the library. While Cheryl will be involved in volunteer activities, she has stepped down from the board. Her wise counsel will be missed and the WLA Board will not be the same without her.
“I think the health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture and our concern for the future can all be tested by how we support our libraries.”
Carl Sagan
