My life as a "library addict" and bibliophile began at age 5 when my father first introduced me to the local library--and libraries (and bookstores) still feel like treasure troves to me. I have volunteered at libraries for years, including serving as a Trustee for both City and County libraries, as well as occupying numerous positions on the Whitefish Library Association Board since 2009.
To support my reading habits, I have taught high school English, served as a controller for two businesses, worked for two decades in the ski/resort industry, managed a book superstore, and finally--prior to recently retiring--spent 18 years managing commercial and residential real estate activities for the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation on State Trust Land, helping generate revenue for education.
Retired Flathead Valley CPA.
My library career began in 1984 as a volunteer at Muldown Elementary School. In 1986 I was hired by Flathead County Library as Supervising Librarian for the Whitefish Branch. In 1994 I joined a group of Whitefish community motivators to create the Whitefish Community Center with the goal of raising funds to build a new Library (and Theater). Four years later we moved into the new facility on Spokane Ave., where it resides today. In 2011 the City Council, by unanimous vote, decided not to renew the inter local agreement with the Flathead County Library. We became Whitefish Community Library in June of 2011 and I was hired as Director. I am proud to have introduced an automated system with public computers available for library patrons. I am proud to have worked with the Whitefish Community Center resulting in the construction of a beautiful new library. I am proud of a community that had faith that a Whitefish Community Library could flourish as an independent, stand alone library. I am most proud of the honor to have served the community as Whitefish librarian for 36+ years. I retired January 1, 2023 and am enjoying time with family and friends, while staying involved in the Whitefish Library Association.
I run a local company called BIRS (www.getreporthelp.com) which helps businesses scale their growth efficiently and manage and implement data systems. I have been the Scoutmaster of the Whitefish Boy Scout Troop since 2020. It is my belief that libraries benefit our community by providing access to free resources for education.

Cheryl Hyland was the inspiration that powered many of the Whitefish Library Association's achievements during her tenure as a board member. Her tireless efforts in fundraising through grant writing, overseeing WLA's Great Fish participation, and many other events made a lasting impact in the community. In addition, her devotion to focusing on board structure and development helped strengthen WLA during crucial periods. The board will miss her joy and passion for the library. Her wise counsel will be missed and the WLA Board will not be the same without her.
The Whitefish Library Association is deeply grateful for Jerry’s decades of support to both the Library and the Association, many of those serving as the president of the WLA Board. Jerry’s father preceded him as the WLA president in the Association's early years, and Jerry proudly carried on the Hanson family tradition, serving as one of WLA's longest-serving members (if not the longest-serving member). In addition to Jerry's long history of Whitefish civic service, he was consistently a staunch supporter of local libraries, serving several years as a chair of the Flathead County Library Board of Trustees, a hard-working appointed member of the Whitefish City Council's Ad Hoc Committee to help research and determine the future of Whitefish's Library, and a tireless and willing volunteer to help legally and operationally implement Whitefish's unanimously approved separation from the County system to create an independent community library. His contributions to, and insight into, the Whitefish Library Association, cannot be replaced and will be sorely missed.
